Missoula County Parks, Trails and Recreation is now accepting applications online for its annual Community Parks & Recreation Grants Program.

The program provides funding to help residents and local organizations enhance parks, trails and other public recreation sites. Staff encourage local nonprofits, schools and community groups to apply by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

$90,000 is available during the 2027 awards cycle for community-driven projects that improve recreation opportunities on public lands located within Missoula County but outside Missoula city limits. Applicants are required to provide a minimum of 25% match of grant funds. Cash, in-kind donations of materials and services, and volunteer hours all qualify as a match. The maximum funding request per application is $30,000. An organization can submit only one grant application per grant cycle.

The program has awarded more than $1 million over the last 40 years, mainly to projects in Missoula County’s rural communities. In recent years, this partnership-oriented grant program supported construction of a skatepark and supporting amenities in Clinton, a playground in Bonner, new beginner Nordic ski trails in Seeley Lake, renovation of historical sites and other improvements to local trail networks and parks.

Prior to applying, interested community members are required to schedule a virtual project consultation with Missoula County Parks, Trails and Recreation staff members. Applications are accepted online.

Program timeline:

  • August: Applications open.
  • Fall: Discuss project ideas with program staff. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30.
  • Winter: Applicant presentations at Missoula County Parks & Trails Advisory Board meeting; board reviews applications and provides a recommendation to the county commissioners.
  • Early 2027: County commissioners reviews recommendations; grants announced and awarded.
  • June 1, 2028: Deadline to complete projects; grant funding expires.
