How It Works

  1. Homeowner submits application for a septic system replacement. Missoula County staff verify eligibility.
  2. Homeowner contacts Missoula Public Health for a septic assessment by calling 405-258-4755.
  3. MPH identifies needed septic and plumbing repairs. Homeowner works with Missoula County Grants and Community Resources staff to coordinate radon testing.
    1. In order to receive a grant through this program, the homeowner must schedule a radon test with the County's contracted radon professional to determine if radon present is above the federal allowable levels of 4pCi/L.
    2. If radon is found to exceed the allowable levels, mitigation is required as part of the project.
    3. All costs associated with testing and mitigation (if required) will be covered by the grant.
  4. Homeowner and Missoula County determine the scope of work. Homeowner obtains three quotes for septic system replacement and three quotes for plumbing repairs.
  5. Homeowner shares quotes with Missoula County. Missoula County finalizes the scope of work and budget.
  6. Missoula County submits complete application to the Montana Department of Commerce for approval.
  7. Homeowner and Missoula County sign and agreement, and homeowner signs a deed restrictions. Construction may begin.
