Jury Duty in District Court

District Court hosts trials for felony charges brought by the state for crimes that occurred anywhere in the county. District Court is located on the second floor of the Missoula County Courthouse.

What is this pink postcard?

If you've received a pink postcard in the mail, it means you're in the pool of over 16,000 people to be randomly selected for jury duty sometime throughout the next jury term (Sept. 1 to Aug. 31). It does not mean that you have been selected for a specific trial.

What do I need to do with it?

You are required to respond and fill out the juror questionnaire. Scan the QR on the postcard or visit ejuror.courts.mt.gov. Your juror number is the nine digit number listed above your name on the front of the postcard.

If you do not receive a postcard, you do not need to do anything.

I received a jury summons, now what?

If you have been summoned for jury duty, you must confirm the receipt of the jury trial summons within 72 hours of receiving it. To report the receipt of your summons, click here to log into the juror portal or call 406-258-3534 for help. Your juror number is the nine digit number listed above your name on the front of the postcard.

If you feel you need to be excused from jury duty, please indicate that in your response.

Do I really need to show up?

Yes. Unless you have been excused by the Judge, your presence is required on the date listed in your summons. Trials frequently settle beforehand. If this happens, the Clerk of Court will attempt to contact you to let you know your appearance is no longer needed.

Sometimes cases settle very last-minute and the Clerk of Court is unable to contact jurors. We strongly encourage each prospective juror, either the night before or the morning of the trial, to click here to check the Jury Trial Status page or call 406-258-4797.

Payment

Checks for jury service will be mailed out approximately two weeks after the conclusion of the trial. You can expect to be paid as follows:

$12 to appear as a potential juror
$25 per day if you are selected to sit as a trial juror
$.70 per mile (IRS standard mileage reimbursement rate) round trip mileage to the Courthouse

Parking

Your summons has a parking pass that allows you to park at any regular metered parking downtown, free of charge. Please make sure your parking pass is face up and clearly visible on your dashboard. Or, you may park on the third floor of the parking garage located on the 100 block of Main Street. When you check in for jury duty, you will be provided with a voucher to get out of the parking garage at no cost.
